About
Kura Gallery Wellington is a contemporary Māori and New Zealand art gallery on Allen Street in Te Aro’s Courtenay Quarter, a short walk from Te Papa. Alongside original artworks, traditional and contemporary Māori carving, jewellery and design, the gallery carries a range of genuine pounamu by established and emerging carvers.
Kura is a licensed stockist for Toi Iho, the mark of authenticity and quality for Māori arts and crafts, and places strong value on the authenticity of work by its Māori artists. The gallery was established in 1998 and also has a space in central Auckland, with both galleries representing artists from across Aotearoa.
The name Kura carries the meaning of something precious or prestigious, and refers to the red feathers once worn by rangatira. The gallery offers gift wrapping, gift vouchers and a wedding gift registry, and ships throughout New Zealand and internationally, making it a practical choice for visitors wanting to send a piece of pounamu home.
