Guided Māori cultural walks on the sacred Arahura River near Hokitika. Hear the legends of Kāti Waewae, find your own pounamu and make a necklace from it.

About
Arahura Greenstone Tours offers guided Māori cultural walks along the Arahura River near Hokitika, one of the richest sources of pounamu in Aotearoa. The guides have a connection to the river and the surrounding whenua that goes back generations, and they share the history and legends of Kāti Waewae, the hapū whose pounamu stories are tied to this river.
Tours begin at Arahura Bridge Heritage Park and pass through the Arahura Pā before following the river. Along the way, guides share the history of the area, point out native birdsong, and show visitors how to recognise pounamu in its natural setting. At the end of the tour, visitors can make a necklace from the piece of stone they found, as a keepsake of the experience. Refreshments are provided.
The walk is easy, over flat ground and river stones, but expect to get your feet wet. Tours run year-round, weather permitting, and smaller groups are preferred, so booking a few days ahead is a good idea.
