About Jade Art Carvings (Brett Phillips)

Jade Art Carvings is the Hokitika workshop of Brett Phillips, who describes himself as a registered Ngāi Tahu pounamu carver. He hand carves pendants, bracelets and sculptures from local West Coast pounamu, from traditional forms such as hei tiki, toki and pikorua to simple rustic pieces shaped with traditional sandstone methods.

He also runs carve-your-own sessions, guiding visitors through every step from choosing a design and a piece of local stone to shaping and polishing their own pendant. No experience is needed, and simple designs can be finished in a couple of hours, with more detailed pieces taking up to two days.
